Why Fall is the Best Time to Go Camping

As summer winds down and the crispness of fall sets in, many people assume camping season is over. But ask any seasoned camper, and they’ll tell you that fall is actually one of the best times to pitch a tent. With its vibrant foliage, cool air, and cozy campfire vibes, fall camping in the Northeast—whether you're in New York, Pennsylvania, or New England—offers an unforgettable experience.

1. Fall Foliage: Nature's Greatest Show

One of the biggest draws of fall camping is the stunning foliage. The forests burst into vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, making every hike or drive a scenic wonderland. Whether you're trekking through the Catskills or cruising through the White Mountains in New Hampshire, the views are jaw-dropping, and it's the perfect backdrop for a camping trip.

2. Crisp, Clear Nights for Stargazing

Fall nights tend to be cooler and clearer, which means perfect conditions for stargazing. Without the summer haze, the skies become a stunning display of stars, planets, and constellations. Imagine sitting around the campfire, gazing up at the Milky Way or spotting a shooting star. We personally love Cherry Springs Dark Skies Park in Pennsylvania and Kejimkujik National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada. Both are designated as dark skies parks. We’ve also seen some gorgeous celestial displays in Acadia National Park in Maine. For great stargazing closer to NYC, head anywhere upstate away from a major city. Hipcamps often make great stargazing spots because there are fewer lights than in major campgrounds, and they are likely to be farther from a main road.

3. Campfires Are Even Cozier

While a campfire is always a camping essential, there's something extra special about a fire in the fall. In the summer it can be almost too hot for a fire. As the cool air settles in, you'll find yourself drawn to its warmth, savoring the crackling flames and that comforting smoky scent. Sitting around the fire with friends or family, wrapped in blankets, sipping hot cocoa or whiskey—it’s the ultimate fall vibe.

4. Delicious Hot Meals Hit the Spot

In summer, you might settle for light meals and hydrating beverages, but in fall, it's all about hearty, warming dishes. After a day of hiking or exploring, you can indulge in delicious comfort foods like campfire chili, bbq ribs, or a hearty mac and cheese. The cooler temps make these carb- and fat-rich meals even more satisfying, as they help keep your body warm through the night. Go all out by ending your meal with a campfire apple pie. Don't forget about seasonal treats—hot apple cider or spiked coffee adds the perfect touch to any fall camping adventure.

5. Stay Active to Stay Warm

Fall camping naturally encourages you to keep moving—whether it’s a brisk hike to stay warm or a scenic drive through New England's backroads to admire the foliage. Hiking trails are less crowded than in the summer, and the cooler weather makes it easier to go the extra mile without overheating. Plus, being active helps you build and maintain warmth, so you'll feel cozy once you settle in for the night. Who doesn’t love hiking to a waterfall? One of our favorite fall hikes cuts across the New York/ Massachusetts border and ends at the beautiful Bash Bish Falls. The state park there has both tent camping and cabin rentals, perfect for even the coldest fall nights.
